Characteristics of
cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrencies are not regulated or controlled by a specific entity.

A decentralized database, called blockchain, is used to keep track of transactions. They can be used as a means of payment, but are not formally considered as such since they are not backed by a central bank or any public authority.

Transactions are irreversible, i.e., once you buy a cryptocurrency, you cannot cancel the transaction. If you wish to get rid of it, you must do the opposite action, i.e. sell it.
